Zonde Rood Zonder Wit (2021)

Came into existence during the making of the performance piece ‘Zie, Een Zoon. (Look, A Son.)’ Working with the colors red and white, the two contrasting and contradictory colors in Christian symbolism, I started a search for the ultimate red and white. Colors to me seem to have some kind of subliminal factor much like big feelings (love, happiness...) , an ultimate high that seems unreachable yet so perfect. The idea is there but you can’t quite grasp it. So I dedicated myself to find the perfect shade of white and the perfect shade of red, so I travelled the world to find them. This post-lockdown with a lot of restrictions still in place, so I travelled digitally on Google Maps with sattelite image. Looking at our planet from above, red seemed harder to find than white. White was easy: snow. So I travelled from the Antarctic to the North Pole, to the Himalaya, to Mongolia, Russia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland, to mountain tops in Switzerland and France to any place I could find snow. For red I went to the Northern Africa, to the Sahara, to south-western China, to the rocky parts of Australia, to volcanic areas in Hawaii, to mountains in Peru... And what did I find? No (perfect) white and no red at all. By zooming in the system glitched and created abstract shapes, partially negative coloured images... The white was more grey, brown, blue, purple or yellow. The red was more orange, beige, brown, terra cotta, purple, pink or peach... So I made compositions out of the glitched and altered areas that from a far distance looked the closest to white and red. The failure was turned into compositions that look like it could be photographs, paintings, media art... There are 39 ‘red’ images and 39 ‘white’ ones, a series of 78 compositions in total. Total failure. Inspired by this work and medium: 'Nivilles'
