TALKING OUR WAY

TALKING OUR WAY

INTO MOTION
TALKING OUR WAY OUT OF OUR MINDS INTO MOTION is the first performance work / method I created in the first Bachelor Performance, Fine Arts. Starting college and a new trajectory / medium a in pandemic was not how I invisioned it. I graduated in Photography in January 2020, right before everything went to shit, pardon my French. After 3-4 months of complete lockdown and already 7 months of social restrictions I entered the new school fully ready to start working again and have some more social interaction. The process was bumpy and the social interaction was barely there. A class full of strangers who remained strangers since there was no more time to spend together than the limited time in the Atelier as every bar, restaurant and other social places were still shut down. So we remained in our own heads most of the time. Which brings us to this work, I feel like we all have spent so much time in our minds during this pandemic and we lost connection to our bodies and the space they are in, but also our mind itself.
In this process I looked for a way to let our subcounciousness speak, litterally. The idea is that a cyclus is created between each of these aspects, space, body and mind. The body (eyes) takes inspiration from the space which automatically processes in the mind and after exports again through the body (via voice and movement) into the space. The goal is to reach a state of consious subconsiousness which is achieved by the constant repetition of this cycle and results in a full connection between mind, body and space. With this connection also time will lose it’s importance.
In practice it outted itself in a performance with myself and two co-performers, each of whom made and own voice recording where they focus on the space around them and start describing it. It starts in a describtive way of thinking and speaking but slowly changes in an associative way and with associations a state of consious subconciousness should arise where you stop overthinking what you say and everything naturally flows out. These recordings then were used to create movement in a different space (under a tent in a garden on a wooden platform) where all performers, each with their own music box, moved together to their own recordings. The audience could walk around and as they did so they could here the different recordings but all performers remained in sight.
In this version recordings were use, mainly due to CoVid restrictions. Ideally every aspect of the method is done simultaniously, all though the recordings also made an interesting addition to the work.
For this version I thank my co-performers: Roos Buskes & Wolfe De Roeck
Future Plans
The intention is to continue this process in the future, research and experiment with this method, look into different things it can be used for e.g. the creation of choreography, therapy, meditational practice... To do so I will look for people to collaborate with on this process and research to fine-tune it and apply in different contexts, spaces and situation through various experiments.
